Dealing with Acne

Acne may appear to be just an inevitable part of growing up and experiencing puberty. However, in deep concern for women’s health care, we must be informed on the different things we must know about acne because it could be more serious than we suspect it to be.

Acne is a condition of the skin where pores on the skin get clogged with oil and dead skin cells. They are most commonly seen on the face, neck, chest, shoulders, and back. Presence of acne could be really annoying and they could be very persistent. Acne wounds may take lots of time before they completely heal and disappear, and in the process, new ones may begin to surface.

This condition could be really stressful and difficult to handle. But thanks to the advent of modern technology, there are many options to take in dealing with acne. It is not usually a serious medical condition but there are times when seeing the doctor becomes a necessity. If the presence of acnes and their scars lowers your self-esteem or affects your daily routines, you could go straight to your dermatologist to have them treated. You may also seek the help of a dermatologist even if you could control or lessen the presence of acne.

The three main factors for the presence of acne are overproduction of oil, irregular shedding of dead skin which irritates the hair follicles of the skin, and the build-up of bacteria. This clog causes the follicle to stick out and produce a whitehead, or open to the surface and darken and produce a blackhead. When blocked hair follicles become infected or inflamed, pimples are produced.

Aside from the three mentioned factors, there are also other things that worsen the case of acne. First are the hormones. Certain hormones increases in both adolescent boys and girls during puberty and these hormones contribute to increase in production of the sebum or oil. Hormonal changes whether related to pregnancy or drug-induced also affect sebum production. Moreover, some medications contribute to the production of acne. Corticosteroids, androgens, or lithium present in drugs taken are known to cause acne. Diet also affects acne production as dairy products and carbohydrate-rich foods trigger acne.

Opposite to what most people think, acne is not caused by either greasy foods or dirty skin. Greasy foods have proved to have very little or no effect in production of acne. Dirty skin also does not trigger acne. In fact, scrubbing too hard or using soaps with too much chemicals irritate the skin and could make acne worse.

There are many meds and dermatological procedures to help you control and cure your acne dilemma. However, here are some home remedies you could try. First, wash problem areas with a gentle cleanser. Do not use too much chemicals for they may irritate the skin and worsen the situation. Also, try over-the-counter acne lotion to dry excess oil and promote peeling. You could also avoid irritants. Go for water-based products. Another method is to watch what touches your face. Keep away from sweat, oil and dirt. Lastly but never the least, do not pick or squeeze blemishes. It may only cause infection and scarring.
