Fictional Heroines

The world is blessed with strong-willed, determined and powerful women who have the guts to shape history and make a change. There are times when the women who were able to inspire and move people are just the products of someone’s wild and colorful imagination. Let us take a moment and give honor to the brave and daring women who inspired us with their courage of heart and strength of spirit.

  • Katniss Everdeen

This post-apocalyptic heroine from District 13 of Panem is not only an eldest child who carried her family on her young and fragile shoulders in order for them to survive but she is also a brave young soul who got up against the injustice and tyranny the districts surrounding the Capitol endured with incomparable bravery and strength. Katniss Everdeen is the protoganist of Suzanne Collins’s The Hunger Games Trilogy who was later portrayed by Jennifer Lawrence in its film adaptation. For a teenage girl who willingly volunteered herself in exchange for her sister whom she loved and adored, who unhesitatingly defied tyranny and oppression, and fought until the end for a brighter future for the whole of Panem, Katniss truly deserves all the praises and honor.

  • Princess Merida

Disney-Pixar’s Brave’s strong-willed and determined princess is a model every girl should look up to and admire. Princess Merida is one tough royalty who preferred riding horses, forgetting manners at the dinner table and doing archery instead of walking with grace and elegance, trying out clothes or looking for a prince charming. She stood up against tradition and even her own mother when she felt like what they dictated were quite not right for her. She is an embodiment of how we should be able to determine what it is we truly want, fight for it, and never let others live our lives.

  • Mulan

Just like Brave’s Merida, Mulan is a courageous and bold woman who stood against tradition especially for the sake of family. She was not only brave enough to replace her elderly father as a soldier to combat invading forces threatening to take over China, she also managed to help save an empire.

  • Shoshanna Dreyfus

This tough Jewish chick from Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds was a young and helpless soul strengthened by great adversity at the hands of the cruel German rule under the leadership of Adolf Hitler. Everything she went through at the hands of the Jew-hating Germans, instead of making her a weak and afraid girl, turned her into a fearless and admirable heroine of Tarantino’s fictional account of the Second World War.

  • Dory

She is Marlin’s loyal companion in his search for his lost son in one of the most loved animated films of all time, Finding Nemo. This funny, weird and seemingly insignificant fish was not only strong-willed and determined enough to stay by Marlin’s side even when he pushed her away and remained a true friend though she was never asked for it, she, more importantly, taught us that whatever we encounter in life, we just have to “keep swimming”.
