Fighting Allergies

Allergies are basically an overreaction of the body towards allergens which can be in a form of a   substance, situations or physical states. Though this must not be taken for granted, panic is never a solution when allergies occur. Knowledge on preventative measures and proper treatment will let you enjoy life despite the allergies.

Generally, people get allergic to a certain food, dust and dust mites, pollen and molds.  These four can be considered the top allergens that eventually affect our lifestyles. You wouldn’t know you have allergies unless reaction starts to show.  Knowing to what particular substance you are allergic is the first step on fighting it. You should know who or what is your enemy first, and that is by visiting your doctor for verification and preventive measures to avoid it to happen again.

Starting with food, it can be from cow’s milk, eggs, soy, nuts, wheat, fish, sea foods or any food that irritates our body. This is different for a simple food intolerance which is a common mistake for most of us and thus, accurate diagnosis should be done to ensure proper treatment. The reaction of the body can be swelling, itchiness on skin, tingling of mouth, coughing, difficulty in breathing, diarrhea, vomiting, and throat tightness. Prevention can be done by simply avoiding the food. However, you just can’t seem to enjoy life better.

Some normally are allergic to dust and dust mites.  This cause them sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose, and asthma symptoms. Prevention can be done with the use of a dehumidifier. Keeping a relative humidity around 50% or below will help prevent the presence of dust and dust mites. Wash your beddings once a week with hot water around 54-60⁰C. Avoid using carpets on floors s dust and dust mites tend to linger of such fabric. Make use of hard wood, tiles, linoleum for your floorings.

Molds are fungi that produce spores that cause allergic rhinitis. It’s not the mold itself but the spores that it releases. They may evade the protective mechanism of the nose and may reach the lungs. These are found in cheese processed by fungus, mushrooms, dried fruits, any food containing yeast, soy sauce and vinegar. They may also grow on area with high moisture like in shower curtains or gardens.  These bring about sneezing, chronic coughing, runny nose, nasal congestion, skin rashes, hives and itchy, watery and red eyes.  As prevention, remove plants inside the house. Clean shower curtains regularly to prevent mold growth. Instead of wall papers, use mold-proof paint on walls.

Pollens are brought by the wind and may come from everywhere. These causes hay fever or pollen allergy and even allergic rhinitis. The symptoms are swollen, pale pink or bluish nose, wrinkles or dark circles under eyes and others which is the same with that of molds. These are very difficult to avoid such that removing plants in your house is not necessary since pollens may come even form faraway places. The use of air conditioners may help as it clean dry out air. Better to know when the pollen counts are at most number that is during mornings or windy days.

When the attack is there, all you have to do is to fight with antihistamines, decongestants, epinephrine and other medicine prescribed by your physician. There are some who still eat food despite the risk of allergies since they know how to counter-act them. Sugar is a well known antihistamine taken after eating food people are allergic with. At the same time, regulate your intake of medicines decongestants for example may increase blood pressure so proper monitoring is a must. Often times, exposure moderate exposure to the allergens are good as this may cause the body to produce an antigen to fight this, thus removing your allergies.
