Last January 10, Easy A star Emma Stone and Oscars 2013 host Seth MacFarlane revealed the list of the nominees for the every category of the most coveted honor bestowed in the world of filmmaking- the Oscars. Here is a review of what we ought to see on February 24th (U.S. time).
For the Best Achievement in Visual Effects, we have The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Life of Pi, Marvel’s The Avengers, Prometheus, and Snow White and the Huntsman. For the Best Achievement in Sound Mixing, Argo, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Lincoln and Skyfall are the ones to watch out for. In the Best Achievement in Sound Editing, Argo, Django Unchained, Life of Pi, Skyfall and Zero Dark Thirty are up against each other.
Now, the films celebrated by The Academy are not only the full-length ones. The Academy also gives recognition to storytellers who present their tales in less than forty minutes. This 2013, Asad, Buzkashi Boys, Curfew, Death of a Shadow and Henry are vying for the Best Live-Action Short Film award. Meanwhile, we have Adam and the Dog, Fresh Guacamole, Head Over Heels, Maggie Simpson in “The Longest Daycare”, and Paperman for the Best Animated Short Film.
Aside from films, documentaries are also given the well-deserved attention and appreciation as Inocente, Kings Point, Mondays at Racine, Open Heart and Redemption are nominated for the Best Documentary- Short Subject award. For the Best Documentary Feature, we have 5 Broken Cameras, The Gatekeepers, How to Survive a Plague, The Invisible War, and Searching for a Sugar Man.
In terms of Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling, only three films were nominated and they are Hitchcock, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and Les Miserables. The Best Achievement in Film Editing will go to Argo, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, or Zero Dark Thirty. In the Best Achievement in Costume Design, Anna Karenina, Les Miserables, Lincoln, Mirror Mirror, and Snow White and the Huntsman are all nominated. For the Best Cinematography award, we have Anna Karenina, Django Unchained, Life of Pi, Lincoln, and Skyfall. The nominees for the Best Production Direction are Anna Karenina, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Les Misrables, Life of Pi, and Lincoln.
Music is also a vital part in filmmaking, and we have two categories to honor the creators of the music that make films a hundred times better. The Best Original Song nominees are “Before My Time” from the film Chasing Ice, “Everybody Needs a Best Friend” from Ted, “Pi’s Lullaby” from Life of Pi, “Skyfall” from Skyfall, and “Suddenly” from Les Miserables. The films with the best scores are Anna Karenina, Argo, Life of Pi, Lincoln and Skyfall.
The whole world is also a part of The Oscar journey as each could submit a film to represent their country but only five will make it to the Oscars night. They are A Royal Affair from Denmark, Amour from Austria, No from Chile, War Witch from Canada, and Kontiki from Norway.
Of course, the backbone of every film must never be forgotten. The nominees for the Best Original Screenplay are Amour, Django Unchained, Flight, Moonrise Kingdom, and Zero Dark Thirty. The ones vying for the Best Adapted Screenplay award are Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Life of Pi, Lincoln, and Silver Linings Playbook.
And the people who give life and substance to the films, the actors and actresses, are important highlights in the filmmaking industry. The nominees for the Best Actor in a Supporting Role are Alan Arkin for Argo, Christoph Waltz for Django Unchained, Phillip Seymour Hoffman for The Master, Robert De Niro for Silver Linings Playbook, and Tommy Lee Jones for Lincoln. The top supporting actresses for 2013 are Amy Adams for The Master, Anne Hathaway for Les Miserables, Helen Hunt for The Sessions, Jacki Weaver for Silver Linings Playbook, and Sally Field for Lincoln. For the male leads, we have Bradley Cooper for Silver Linings Playbook, Daniel Day-Lewis for Lincoln, Denzel Washington for Flight, Hugh Jackman for Les Miserables, and Joaquin Phoenix for The Master. The nominees for the Best Actress in a Leading Role are Jennifer Lawrence for Silver Linings Playbook, Emmanuelle Riva for Amour, Quvenzhane Wallis for Beasts of the Southern Wild, Jessica Chastain for Zero Dark Thirty, and Naomi Watts for The Impossible.
Of course, our dear animators are also remembered in The Academy Awards. The nominees for Best Animated Feature Film this year are Brave, Frankenweenie, ParaNorman, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, and Wreck-it Ralph.
And who could ever forget the brains and talent behind the scenes, the directors. The top ones last 2012 were Ang Lee for Life of Pi, Benh Zeitlin for Beasts of the Southern Wild, David O. Russell for Silver Linings Playbook, Michael Haneke for Amour, and Steven Spielberg for Lincoln.
And the biggest award, the Best Motion Picture of the Year, will go to one of the following: Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Amour, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, or Zero Dark Thirty.
