Women aim to have smooth and soft skin. Though it may appear as something too trivial for men, we take our skin seriously. We want it to always look its best. Why not? It is what we wear everyday. However, there are times when our skin would not be at its best like when it is as dry as the Sahara desert. In times of such trouble, take heart and fear not. Here are some simple and relatively easy ways to deal with flaky, itchy, and dry skin.
Warm water is good for the skin and it feels really good, but a hot one gets a big no. Hot water get rids of the natural oil barriers on the skin. Sounds good? No. We are badly in need of those oil barriers. They help trap moisture thus keeping our beloved skin smooth and moist. They are there for a reason. And hot water is one of their main enemies. Lower down the notch a little. Make it from hot to warm. Also, do not spend too much time in your steamy shower. Only about five to ten minutes is recommended. After your relaxing warm shower, gently pat your skin dry and moisturize it perhaps with a lotion.
Also, strong astringents and cleansers get the big no. Be gentle on your skin. See it as a delicate baby that needs not too much and certainly not too little caring. Your skin needs just the gentle touch of your cleansers. Go for gentle soaps that are free of fragrance. Soap products with deodorants and antibacterial properties could be too harsh for the skin. You may also want to consider going for cleansers with ceramides. They are the fatty molecules that make up the outer barrier of the skin. They help lock in moisture thus keeping the skin soft and moist. Products with artificial ceramides help replace those we lose as we grow older. You must also go really easy on toners, cleansers, and astringents made with alcohol. Alcohol dries the skin. Also, when exfoliation, do not scrub too much and too hard because doing so irritates and thickens the skin.
When you shave, do it intelligently. It irritates the skin. Shaving does not only remove unwanted hair but also scrapes off the natural oils of the skin. The best time to shave is after shower when the hairs are more pliable and softer. Always use a shaving cream or gel when shaving and shave in the direction of hair growth. Also make sure that the blade is kept sharp and clean.
Shielding your skin from the sun’s harmful rays is also a pretty good idea. Cover up. Use lotions with high SPF and wear the proper clothes depending on the weather.
It is also best to follow the rules of moisturizing. The simplest products can soothe your dry skin. Petroleum jelly is a good choice as well as your cream, mineral oil or lotion. Here are simple steps how to do it. First, wash with a non-soap liquid cleanser. It is better if it contains ceramides. Next, pat the skin dry for not more than twenty seconds. After that, apply a thick moisturizer on your slight damp skin. Lastly, moisturize your hands every time you wash them to prevent the evaporating water take away more moisture.
