The skin, when talking about outside beauty plays a very important role. It is the outer covering of our body and the one most exposed to the environment. There are pollution, dirt, heat and other harmful things that are unavoidable that damages our skin. Our skin being the largest body organ, acquire disorders to both our physical and psychological well being. We have the five most common skin disorders according to Dr. Macrene Alexiades-Armenakas, assistant clinical professor of Yale University School of Medicine. These five are Acne, Eczema, Seborrheic Dermatitis, Skin Cancer and Psoriasis. These are not arranged in order of the most prevalent as dermatologists are still arguing about.
Acne is the one causing pimples. It occurs as the passageway that connects the skin’s pores to the oil glands are clogged. Acne often appears at the face, neck, shoulders, chest and back. It can also be in the form of whiteheads or blackheads. Nodular and cystic acne are severe cases such that they are formed deep into the skin and may cause scars. The cause can be hereditary but hormones are the ones more likely to blame. Very high frequency of growth hormones can cause acne. Teenagers tend to have more acne due to growth hormones work at its peak. And as you grow older, there will be less tendency for having pimples.
There are three common forms of eczema; atopic dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis and nummular dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis is manifested by itchy rashes in the crux of the elbow and behind the knees. It is the most common form of eczema and is more potent on children as a long-term genetic disease. Allergic contact Dermatitis is seen in adults that can be due to the use of cosmetics, fragrances, and jewelries. Nummular dermatitis are flaky coin-shaped patches on the skin. This is due to dryness and can be very itchy. A skin moisturizer is suggested to prevent dryness of the skin.
Seborrheic Dermatitis can be simplified as dandruff. This causes oily, waxy patches on the scalp that makes it distinct among other dermatitis stated earlier. According to US News and World Report, 5% of people are affected with this disoreder. It can start from the first six months known as “cradle cap” and when cured may still show up until puberty.
Skin Cancer. It seems crucial finding the word ”cancer”. It is. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in US. Sun damage can be the primary cause of skin cancer due to too much exposure to UV light. People with fair skin are said to be less resistant to UV light compared to dark skins. Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are the most common forms of skin cancer however, 75 % of skin cancer deaths can be accounted for melanoma, 3rd most common form.
Psoriasis appears on the elbow and knees and may spread to other parts of limbs and trunk. It is a chronic and disfiguring genetic disease. It appears as red and thick excess skin tissue covered with silvery scales. Patients having this disease show poor self-esteem as the disease makes them very self –conscious.
If ever in doubt of any of the skin disorders, it is always better to check a dermatologist to verify your illness. Treatment would be easier and more effective if done as early as possible. It may be shameful to admit to have such disease but it is always better to be cured than to worsen the case by keeping it to yourself. Take care of your skin.
