Aside from simply brushing your teeth at least twice a day, there is a bunch of other things you could do for your overall oral health care. We could keep our gums and teeth healthy by proper brushing, flossing, and interdental cleaning. Lucky for us, there too many ways to keep our gums healthy and our teeth white and bright for so long.

Of course, it is a must to brush the teeth at least twice a day. Aside from brushing, we should floss or use an interdental cleaner. Plaque is the most common cause of gum diseases, so we better get focused in fighting off plaque. It could be eliminated from our mouth and teeth by brushing properly and cleaning the in-betweens of the teeth. It is advisable to use a toothbrush with soft bristles so that we could brush near the gum line without having to harm the gums. We should also make sure that our toothbrush is in good condition. Dental experts recommend replacing our toothbrush every three to four months. Tongues should also be well cleaned since bacteria could also thrive on them. Powered toothbrushes are also recommended since they could clean better than the traditional ones.

Flossing and using interdental cleaners is also a must. There are areas that a toothbrush could not reach, like those in-betweens of the teeth. Floss and interdental cleaners then comes into the picture. They remove bacteria and food particles stuck in between the teeth. It is best to ask our dental health care providers on how to use them properly to avoid harming our gums.

It is also a must to start eating healthy. We must see to it that we follow a balanced diet not only for our overall wellness but also for our oral health. We should see to it that we get enough calcium everyday. Low calcium level in the body is associated with certain gum diseases.

We should also try to limit our intake of sweets. Eating snacks with too much sugar could cause tooth decay. When we eat sugar, the bacteria transform the sugar into acids that would damage the tooth structure. Whenever we eat sweet food, it is best to immediately brush our teeth afterwards or just opt for smart alternatives like fruits.

Not only what we eat proves to be significant with respect to our oral health but also the time we eat. Foods eaten as a part of a meal are less harmful for the teeth. During meals, more saliva is produced which washes the food from the mouth and counteracts the effects of acids.

Chewing sugarless gum is also a good idea. Chewing sugarless gum after a meal helps get rid of food particles caught in between teeth and helps prevent plaque build up by stimulating the production of saliva.

A professional cleaning by your trusted dentist twice a year is a must. There are build ups in our mouth that only a professional hand could take care of. Moreover, it is also a chance for our dentists to see if our oral health is still well enough.

Another thing we should do is to quit smoking. According to studies, tobacco use appears to be one of the major factors of the beginning and development of periodontal diseases.
