Zumba is a fitness program in form of a dance invented by Alberto “Beto” Perez in 1986. What is actually interesting about this Columbian dance is that it was created by accident. Dancer and choreographer Alberto “Beto” Perez forgot to bring the specific music for the dance he was teaching. So, he just took the tapes already in his bag which are the conventional salsa and merengue. He started doing aerobic steps while dancing to his non-aerobic music. It garnered much success in Colombia. By 2001, he moved to the United States and partnered with Alberto Perlman and their new concept was discovered by Fitness Quest with which they signed a contract.

As Zumba burns lots and lots of calories (about 500 to 1000 calories per Zumba session), it easily became a favorite form of workout. Not only does Zumba offer great benefits and so much fun, it also caters to almost every age group. There are eight types or categories of Zumba namely just Zumba, Zumba Gold, Zumba Toning, Aqua Zumba, Zumbatomic, Zumba in the Circuit, Zumba Gold-Toning, and Zumba Sentao. Each and every kind is designed to fit perfectly to whatever lifestyle, whatever need and whatever kind of student or dancer.

A usual Zumba session can last for about an hour. Take note that if you ever plan to take Zumba classes, make sure that the instructor is licensed by Zumba Academy. The program includes exercises using both fast and slow music. It also involves resistance training. Zumba is a massive combination of a wide variety of traditional dances. To name a few, we have salsa, merengue, salsa and belly dancing.

But why do lots of people prefer Zumba over every other form of fitness program? What sets it apart? Well, the main reason would surely be being highly effective in burning calories. A study even shows that Zumba can help a person burn more calories than doing cardio kickboxing and step aerobics. However, the amount of calories burnt will mainly depend on the kind of music used and the energy of both the dancer and the instructor. Moreover, Zumba is a total package in terms of workout. It starts with warm-ups and it incorporates resistance training both in warm-up and the actual exercise. It also exercises the upper body a lot unlike with other workouts where energy is focused on the feet and legs. Also, it makes people actually enjoy the classes since it can use a wide variety of music and the steps are easy to learn. It is also an effective stress buster since it lets you release energy in a fun and exciting manner.

Working out does not have to be a punishment we must endure to stay fit and healthy. Rather, it can be a fun activity we would always look forward to every week.
