Preventing Allergies

When you eat a certain food, smell a certain scent, or get exposed to something like dust or perhaps the sun’s rays, and then you feel like something weird is going on with your body, you might have an allergic reaction. Allergy is not something really nice and it would be best to not having to experience it. So, the best way to deal with allergy is to prevent its occurrence. As most people say, the best way to prevent something is to find out what causes it, and keep away from those causes. Here are the most common allergens.

First, we have the pollens. They are present in plants. Whenever they around, a safety factor would be perhaps to stay indoors. However, that may not even help since these allergens are really small and are generally windborne. They are so small, light, produced in considerably large quantities, and could be carried off in long distances. Of course, getting rid of plants with pollens that trigger an allergic reaction from your garden or backyard would be of some help. During pollen season, avoid prolonged and close contact with pollens as much as possible. Also, stay indoors most especially when pollen counts are incredibly high. This happens on warm, dry, breezy days. If going outside is inevitable, wear a mask that is specially designed to keep the pollens away from entering your nasal passages. A smart way to avoid them would be to have your trip or vacation when the pollen counts are really high, and then go to places far from where it is expected that these pollens would be like seashores.

Next, we have molds. Yes, they are allergens, too. And bad news, they are hard to avoid. To reduce your exposure, avoid moist, shady areas outdoors where these molds tend to be abundant. Places like that include greenhouses, compost piles, mills, and grain fields or bins. There are also moist, shady places indoors like damp basements, damp closets, bathrooms, fresh food storages, air conditioners, humidifiers, garbage pails, mattresses, upholstered furniture, and old foam rubber pillows. Keep the lawns mowed and the leaves raked. However, do not do this yourself. Have someone else do the job. Also, avoid walks in tall vegetations and avoid travelling to the country during harvest season. Make sure that moldy places like summer cabins are already aired out and cleaned before you start staying there. It is also suggested to open a fan and window after showering to let the humidity escape.

Dust mites are also allergens and they are most effectively reduced if we decrease the amount of dust in our homes. Dust-proof your home. Go for window shades instead of curtains unless you would wash curtains periodically in hot water, opt for hardwood floors with washable throw rugs instead of carpets, and consider vinyl or leather-covers instead of upholstered ones in covering furniture.

Animals are also causes of allergy. If you cannot bear the thought of getting rid of a pet, here are some suggestions. Have someone bathe your cat weekly and brush it outdoors more frequently. Remove materials that could trap animal skin flakes. And keep them out of the bedroom.

Certain kinds of food also cause allergic reactions. Ask your health provider for finding out which give you allergies and avoid eating them.
