Elimination Diet

As the term itself, elimination diet is a type of diet in which a certain food is removed from your regular diet. It requires thorough identification of foods which an individual cannot consume without having to suffer adverse effects. It can be used to detect allergies, food intolerances o physiological mechanisms such as metabolic and reaction towards toxins. This diet was suggested by Dr. Albert Rowe in 1926. As of today, there are common elimination diets done by people by choice such as;

–          Veganism. An eating habit in which people totally remove or eliminate animal meat and food products that came from animals such as dairy, eggs and the like.

–          Vegetarianism. Is a less extreme version of Veganism in which people are still taking milk, cheese, egg and other animal products except for the sole meat.

–          Gluten-free diet. is now becoming popular due to the increasing number of people with celiac disease (gluten intolerance). However, it is not really necessary for the people in general since gluten is also good for digestion.

The process would normally take for around 2-4 weeks or more depending on the goal, the food eliminated and the patient. It will start with removing all suspected food that could cause allergic reactions or intolerance. I suggested you start cleaning up your kitchen and removing all foods to be eliminated because the “will power” may not be enough to resist eating “not allowed” foods. The patient is then observed in such time if adverse effects still occur. This will be done under proper monitoring not only of the doctor but also of the person. The use of the food journal would be very efficient as all information should be noted accordingly to properly determine the food to be eliminated. You can opt to try other test such as Food Allergy Testing but it is quite expensive and less efficient since allergies can start to trigger only upon exposure to food together with different factors.

The eliminated food should be abroad list depending on the partial recall of the patient of previous events. Normally, those foods that can normally cause allergies are already removed such as milk, egg, nuts, and others. The broader the list, the better will be the result. After recording no adverse reaction, you will now begin the reintroduction. Reintroduction is a process of adding food that are removed into your diet and note any adverse reaction to occur. You wouldn’t want to lose all those food in your diet especially when they are good for you. So you really have to determine the principal cause of the adverse reaction. Reintroduction is done to fully determine the exact food type that is not good for you for you to be able to enjoy the food that are not really the cause of adverse reaction.  This process requires sensitivity on whatever changes may occur to your body such as your mood, sleep, energy level, digestion, and bowel movement. Proper record keeping in your food journal is a must to be able to fully assess your condition.

This diet may take some time but is found to be more effective in determining foods to be avoided by a patient. As doctors would normally say, if it is not good for you, avoid it or ELIMINATE it in your system.
